This is the first long span steel bridge in Hong Kong. It is a suspension bridge with a main span 1,377m serves as the principal link to the airport.

The 41m wide bridge deck was designed to carry two three-lane carriageways on the upper deck and two railway tracks and two sheltered single-lane carriageways on the lower deck. It is the world's longest span suspension bridge carrying both road and rail traffic.

The surfacing of the main carriageways comprises a single course of 40mm mastic asphalt, with pre-coated drippings.
