Mastic Asphalt Project in Mainland China - JiangYin Bridge

Jiangyin Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the world over the Yangtze River in PRC, was choosing mastic asphalt as the road surface pavement material. Anderson Asphalt Limited was the specified contractor.

Following are some of the key statistics of the project :

  • Span 1,385m. The 4th longest suspension bridge in the world.
  • Water proofing and surfacing system : Mastic Asphalt, over bituminous waterproofing membrane
  • The Mastic Asphalt was designed to accommodate the range of temperature movement of +70oC to -15oC and show no softening at 70oC.
  • The surfacing consists of a wearing course of machine laid mastic asphalt over a waterproof membrane applied to the steel bridge deck. The waterproofing membrane, which comprises polymer-modified bituminous binder, is fully compatible with the mastic asphalt.

The mastic asphalt surface is designed to cope with the following environmental parameters :

  1. Temperature
    • Highest surface temperature 70oC
    • Highest air temperature 38.1oC
    • Lowest are temperature -14.2oC
    • Annual average 15.2oC
    • Average hottest month 27.7oC

  2. Precipitation
    • Highest Monthly average 181.8mm
    • Highest in a day 219.6mm

  3. Relative Humidity
    • Annual relative humidity 80%
    • Highest monthly average 85%

Design Traffic Capacity:

Up to year 2000 : 26,910 trucks/day (equivalent to 48,557 cars/day)

Up to year 2010 : 56,003 trucks/day (equivalent to 95,403 cars/day)

Up to year 2017 : 61,548 trucks/day (equivalent to 99,608 cars/day)

Durability:

15 years for the design traffic load and capacity
